Cataract Surgery

Cataract Surgery - Raghunand Sastry MD

As you age, you will likely encounter decreased visual acuity and focusing ability. One of the most common disorder of the eye is the cataract, which occurs when the eye's natural lens undergoes chemical changes causing it to become cloudy. A cloudy lens cannot effectively focus light on the retina resulting in blurred or obscured vision.

The only way to treat a cataract is through surgery. Dr. Sastry uses a cataract surgery technique requiring only a tiny incision. Through this incision, he removes the faulty lens and replaces it with a synthetic lens. Once the new lens is successfully implanted, sutures are not required because the small incision heals itself quickly.

What To Expect During Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is a painless procedure that takes about 15 minutes start to finish. Your eye is anesthetized with special eyedrop, your cloudy lens is carefully removed, then a new lens is implanted. Patients are discharged from the facility 20-30 minutes after surgery with a patch on the operated eye. No stitches are required as the incision is very small and heals quickly.

Most of Dr. Sastry's cataract surgery patients have 20/20 vision within a few days of the procedure.

  • Dr. Sastry uses the standard monofocal lens implant as well as the multifocal intraocular lens implant for cataract surgery, and the toric implant for astigmatism.
  • He performs 30-40 cataract surgeries a month and has done this surgery on many physician colleagues.
  • Cataract and other eye surgeries are usually performed at the hospital -- Regional Medical Center of San Jose or Advanced Surgery Center in San Jose. They are done under local anesthesia with sedation administered by an anesthesiologist.

My cataract surgery with Dr. Sastry went better than expected. My vision is now fantastic! His office staff if very supportive and the surgery center is competent and compassionate.

My cataract surgery was a complete success. Dr. Sastry's office and the Advanced Surgery Center were especially careful following the Covid-19 guidelines, which immediately put me at ease. As a result of my cataract surgery I can now do away with prescription glasses and instead just buy over the counter "readers" just for reading. I am very happy with my cataract surgery. Thank you Dr. Sastry.

Dr. Sastry performed cataract surgery on my right eye then my left eye with success beyond my expectation. Prior to the surgery, it was very difficult to read a book or work on my computer without heavy eye strain, even with glasses. I can now read any book or perform or work on my computer with clear vision. I shake my head at the amazing success!
